At the Dragon's Gate

Origin-Dialogue-Transformation

For violin, cello, and piano – Duration: c 17:00

This is the second work in a series inspired by visits to Ryoanji, a temple and rock garden in Kyoto, Japan. Premiered by the Williams Trio, the work consists of three movements which flow from one to the next creating a seamless whole. Origin is meditative, but with an underlying energy building gradually from almost nothing to a dramatic climax which then recedes to Dialogue, a more lyrical and soloistic section.  The opening materials are brought back in a new form for the closing movement, Transformation.  Its fast, virtuosic and almost “jazz fusion” feel leads to a dazzling and virtuosic conclusion.
